Oahu, HI // Day #3
I don’t even know where to begin.. TODAY WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!! We woke up at 1:30 AM [Yes you read that right] to begin our journey of hiking the Stairway to Heaven [Haiku Trail.] We drove for an hour until we reached the Haiku neighborhood. We parked a good distance away so that we wouldn’t get a ticket, and began our [illegal] adventure up the mountain. We had to drop down into a canal and find our way to the trail… in the dark. Once we got to the main Haiku trail, we were terrified because the guard was already on duty and sitting in her car in front of the path. Josh and I snuck past and somehow found ourselves on the trail after climbing over three fences… Once we were on the trail, it is HARD to lose your way seeing as that it is a staircase straight up the mountain!!! When we had been hiking for about five minutes, the guard shined her massive spotlight on us and Josh and I panicked! It scared us but we weren’t thinking of stopping thats for sure! We were committed to getting to the top of the mountain before sunset and crossing our fingers that the it would be a clear day. We reached the top [meeting many friends along the way .. ~18 others] at around 5:30 AM… which was a little early. It was super windy at the top, so Josh and I found a patch of grass and snuggled up to each other to get some shut eye before the sun. We woke at the perfect time to watch the sun rise on the most beautiful and clear day!! The whole island lit up and we could see everything! It was so magical!! We couldn’t get over how beautiful and breathtaking the views were… When we finally decided to make the trek down.. we came to an abrupt stop after spotting the police officer waiting for us. We decided to wait it out and lounged out on the steps from above until finally he drove away. We booked it down the stairs when he was gone and made it back to our car just in time. Josh and I were so happy that we had decided to do this because it was one of the best adventures we have been on! We rewarded ourselves with burritos and shaved ice for lunch and then played in the ocean and on the beach until sundown.. For dinner we experienced Uncle Bob’s pizza, which was a interesting to say the least… after which we barely made it home before crashing on our beds. Such an incredible day!
